In 2023: SEAA Graduate Student Check-in Meetings [see current year at NEWS> For Graduate Students]
As a series of virtual meetings, this SEAA graduate student check-in gathering was organized to facilitate an ongoing conversation among anthropology graduate students working on East Asia with various research themes and methodologies. We wanted to form a low-key, low-stakes, yet supportive community where we can gather and exchange inspiration. From April to September 2023, we met on a regular basis for an hour every third Wednesday of the month at 8pm EST. Graduate students in various phases of their research joined.

Discussion Topics:
● April 19. Methodologies 1) Fieldwork
- What are the methodologies that we bring for doing fieldwork? Ex) documentary films, photography, poetry, or ethno-literature
- How do you navigate problems you encounter during fieldwork?
- How do you organize your data?
● May 17. Methodologies 2) Dissertation Writing
- What are the challenges that you encounter when you’re in the phase of dissertation writing?
Ex) translation, transcription, time management, communication with your committee, coping with loneliness while writing
● June 21. Writing grant applications
- Let’s share experiences and tips on how to write grant proposals for dissertation fieldwork and dissertation writing. How can we manage grant proposals at different phases? How do we cope with rejections?
● July 19. Being on the job market
- How to get prepared for academic jobs in anthropology, East Asian studies, or elsewhere?
- How do we cope with uncertainty during this process pertaining to our future career?
● August 16. Teaching about and/or in East Asia
- From organizing a syllabus to teaching an undergraduate course, what are things that we ought to keep in mind?
- What does it mean to teach about East Asia anthropologically?
● September 20. Writing for the public: Conversation with our SEAA Column Editors (Aaron Su and Jieun Cho)
- Different channels for communicating your research and public engagement: blog posts, op-eds, media interviews, etc.
